A GPSDO (GPS Disciplined Oscillator) is a device that uses the highly accurate timing signals from a GPS receiver to control and stabilize an oscillator. It relies on the GPS 1-pulse-per-second (1PPS) output to discipline a temperature-controlled crystal oscillator (TCXO) on the control board. Using a specialized filtering method, the GPSDO removes jitter from the GPS 1PPS signal, allowing the TCXO to maintain exceptionally high frequency accuracy through continuous correction. The circuit board is equipped with an LCD display that shows GPS signal strength, time, and real-time frequency accuracy.

The 1575 MHz signal from the GPS antenna enters the GPS module. The module outputs both a 1PPS (one-pulse-per-second) signal and a GPS lock signal, which are passed to the CPLD (FPGA) and MCU. The 1PPS signal is used as a gate reference to measure the frequency error of the 10 MHz OCXO. Based on this measurement, the MCU generates an EFC (Electronic Frequency Control) correction signal, which adjusts the OCXO's control voltage to maintain precise output frequency.

The accuracy is two orders of magnitude higher than that of a standard temperature-controlled crystal oscillator. With continuous GPS lock and strong satellite reception, the measured output frequency can be maintained within 0.003 Hz.

Front Panel

  • BNC output: 10 MHz sine wave
  • BNC 1PPS: pulses, synchronized to UTC
  • SMA for GPS antenna
  • PWR LED: supply and GPS lock status — blinking (GPS not locked), long light (GPS locked), no light (no power)
  • ALM LED: light (accuracy better than 0.1 Hz), no light (accuracy at or below 0.1 Hz)
  • DB9: RS232 GPS NMEA, 9k6
  • DC jack

Rear Panel

  • LCD 1602

Warm Up Start

  • The first start in a new location can take around 5 minutes.
  • Depends on satellite count and GPS antenna position.
  • There is also warm-up of the internal TCXO — also a few minutes.

Accuracy

  • The accuracy is two orders of magnitude higher than that of a standard temperature-controlled crystal oscillator. With continuous GPS lock and strong satellite reception, the measured output frequency (PP) can be maintained within 0.003 Hz.

LCD Note

1. GPS Signal Strength Display

The first two characters on the top line indicate GPS signal strength.

  • Character 1: Antenna icon (always displayed).
  • Character 2: GPS signal strength indicator with six levels, from weakest to strongest — flashing single bar, single bar, two bars, bars 2+3, bars 2+3+4, bars 2+3+4+5.

2. Custom Character Display Area

A six-character area that can be configured through commands. See the manual for more information.

3. Time Display Area

An eight-character area showing the time, which can also be adjusted via commands.

4. Disciplined (Taming) Status Indicator

A single-character indicator. Displays "L" when the system is fully disciplined and operating at its highest accuracy. Otherwise, this position remains blank.

5. Reference Output Frequency Display Area

A fifteen-character section that shows the output reference frequency.

⚠ LCD Self-Test: Upon powering on the device, the LCD first shows all pixels, then clears completely. This allows you to verify that the LCD dot matrix is functioning correctly.
